Marriage Counseling: What's It Like?

The reason that few people don't seek marriage counseling is that they are not aware of the marriage counseling sessions. They think that people lie down on their bed and tell about their bad things in life. Is there a therapist, who notes down everything you say? This may resemble a marriage interview in a television show. But, in marriage counseling, the therapist works with you through frank and open conversations. They listen to your problems with an open mind. It is much enjoyable and comfortable, when you work with a professional therapist.

The Session

It is a meeting of two individuals together for a joint therapy session, in the presence of the therapist. The therapist ensures that the partners are comfortable with him. So, he generally creates an atmosphere for the discussion. He asks few questions aimed at understanding the genesis of the problem. For example, they may ask you the main problems in your married life and ask your partner to explain his/her side of the story. The counselor listens to both versions of the story and he does not tell you that you are at wrong or good. It is not a blame session. He gives equal importance to the feelings of the affected parties and believes in the old adage that marriage is all about compromise.

The therapist helps the couple to understand the feelings of their better half. At times, the feelings of both the partners may be different. It is essential to understand the behavior pattern of your partner to a particular situation. For example, men always think of money, while women think of their children and family. Therapist helps you to analyze the basic cause of your problem. The misunderstandings in your married life are totally removed and you will be able to see your partner, in a better way. He reminds the partners that marriage is a team effort .Situations may arise where the other half of the team walks off the marriage field, wherein the marriage ends in a divorce or forfeit Marriage counselors are specially trained to tackle such situations in life.

The good and bad points of your married life are told to the partners. He advises the couple to engage in those activities, which strengthens their married life. It also improves the work relations. It helps you to respect your better half. The stress level in the family is reduced and there will more bonding between the family members. A sigh of relief will be experienced by the family members. Marriage counseling sessions uncovers the truth and explores your relationship. It cures all those wounds in the married life. The trust and commitment is re-established.
